Delusional Donovan
Somebody check Donovan McNabb. The Eagles’ quarterback might be losing it. That is admitting that he once had it, which could also be heatedly debated.
McNabb has always said some wacky things. He’s a strange bird, pun intended. He makes corny, weird jokes and funny faces on a regular basis. It’s just Donovan being Donovan.
But this time he might have crossed over into the insane asylum. He thinks there are a lot of pundits picking the Eagles to win the division. He also really believes the Eagles should have won every NFC East game last year.
“I don’t [fear anybody]. We beat the Cowboys and we should have beat them in the first game. The Redskins, we should have beaten them in the first game. The Giants, we should have beat them both times,” McNabb said Tuesday following the Eagles’ first training camp practice at Lehigh. “And it’s not just teams in our own conference. It’s teams in the NFC period. I feel we can compete with all of them. And if you ask those teams, they will tell you the same. We have a team that you have to look out for.
“It all starts with me and it goes through the whole offense. … If we [have to go 13-3], we’ll do that.”
Wow, talk about delusional. Maybe Donovan took too many hits as the Giants dominated and sacked him 12 times in the first meeting between the two teams. Maybe he’s never recovered, because the Eagles were never really in their first game with Dallas and lost by 21 points.
Wait, it gets even stranger. McNabb sees the Eagles (yes, pretty much the same team that struggled to finish 8-8 last season) as a favorite to win the conference.
“A lot of people have picked us to win the NFC,” he said. “And rightfully so. It’s not that hard to see the type of team that we have. You don’t win NFC East championships or the NFC on paper. You put it out on the field. Our team hasn’t changed that much where we can’t win the NFC again.”
Somebody must be sending McNabb counterfeit literature. Most prognosticators are picking the Eagles to finish last, not first in the difficult NFC East this season. With heir apparent Kevin Kolb waiting patiently with the clipboard, the common perception is that McNabb needs a big season to remain with the team beyond this year. But McNabb doesn’t think a Super Bowl appearance is needed.
“No, I’ll be here,” he said. “We’ll sign another 10-year deal and I’ll be here. I’m sure you will all use that as the headline. It will be about $200 million, signing bonus about $40-45 [million].”
At least he was kidding about the new 10-year contract. Or so we think.
