Much of the talk in the Field House centered not on the live action, but off-the-field whispers. It was reported by ESPN that the Packers and Eagles spoke about Brett Favre. Sounds strange, huh? Well, it is. But it did happen. The Packers called the Eagles to see if by some miracle they were interested in the future Hall of Famer.
Not surprisingly, the Eagles had absolutely no interest. Why would they need a quarterback right now? The Birds already have Donovan McNabb, heir apparent Kevin Kolb and veteran A.J. Feeley. Having McNabb is similar to having Favre — a veteran quarterback who you are not certain is still one of the league’s best, yet has potential to be one of the league’s best this season.
Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg spoke to the media after practice and didn’t even want to go near the subject. “I’m staying away from that,” Mornhinweg said. “He’s a first-ballot Hall of Famer, so that’s about all I’m saying.” That’s probably a good idea.
Favre isn’t going to be anywhere near Lehigh anytime soon, but will running back Brian Westbrook? The Eagles’ veterans are obligated to report by 7 p.m. Thursday and nobody is certain Westbrook, unhappy with his current contract, will be there. Several calls to his new agent Todd France were not returned. Does that mean Westbrook will not report on time and make a statement to the Eagles’ front office. It’s time to sit and wait.
