Victor Abiamiri was going to get every chance possible to win the starting spot at left defensive end. The Eagles liked what they were seeing from the second-year defensive end.
Abiamiri, though, injured his right hand and needs surgery that will likely leave him on the sidelines for quite some time. That leaves Juqua Parker (formerly Juqua Thomas), newcomer Chris Clemons and maybe Darren Howard to fight for the starting spot in the meantime. Abiamiri’s injury gives Clemons and Howard an opportunity they probably wouldn’t have been received.
Back in Action
The “Over-30 Club” had the morning off. That meant no Donovan McNabb, no William Thomas, no Jon Runyan, no Brian Dawkins and some more. The Eagles without their elders have a totally different look — one of a team that probably wouldn’t win very many games. They were all back Monday afternoon, looking fresh and well rested.
The Eagles’ top pick, defensive tackle Trevor Laws, was also back. The Notre Dame product participated in his first practice since signing his rookie deal. Laws had been out with a foot injury.
“Next step, put some pads on,” Laws said after the Eagles completed their afternoon practice san pads.
One thing was clear as the Eagles went through the workout: Donovan McNabb looks good. He was zipping balls into tight spaces and looked to be completely healthy. He even remained after practice and did some running on his own, something you rarely saw from the former Pro Bowl quarterback in the past.
One player who didn’t impress — and hasn’t impressed all throughout camp and minicamp — was tight end Kris Wilson. The former Chief dropped another pass that landed in his hands, giving him too many to count for one training camp. Ironically, Wilson was known as a pass-catching tight end in college for the University of Pittsburgh. This isn’t Pittsburgh though.
With no pads and no contact in the afternoon, there were no more on-field scuffles. It was business as usual — with the veterans back in the fold.
