7/31/2008- PM Practice

Rookie defensive end Bryan Smith returned Thursday afternoon to practice for the first time this training camp. Smith was falling way behind thanks to a hamstring injury. Where does he stand now? And what about the other injured Eagles?

DE Bryan Smith – The rookie has an opportunity to actually work his way into the rotation with Victor Abiamiri out for at least the rest of camp. Having missed basically the first two weeks though could come back to haunt him.

DE Victor Abiamiri – The second-year pro could be out for the season after hand surgery. The Eagles still have plenty of options with Chris Clemmons, Darren Howard, Juqua Parker and Smith all capable of playing left defensive end.

DT Kimo von Oelhoffen – Any injury to a player as ancient as Kimo could be career threatening. Von Oelhoffen, 37, is closer to 40 than 30 and some knee inflammation and missed practices could prohibit him from ever playing in NFL game.

CB Asante Samuel – The big free agent signing’s hamstring is improving but he’s “still a little bit away,” according to coach Andy Reid. Don’t expect Samuel to be rushed back. The Birds have too much invested into the Pro Bowl cornerback and durability has never been an issue for him.

TE L.J. Smith – It’s only a calf injury, but it is disconcerting considering L.J.’s 2007 season was littered with health problems. Plus, the Eagles aren’t sure how long he’s going to be out.

RB Ryan Moats – Bad ankle or not, Moats wasn’t going to make this team. The problem might just keep him from getting another job once the Eagles cut him.
