The Best for All Concerned

Andy Reid says Donovan McNabb will be his quarterback next year, Donovan says he wants to be here next year but is it really the best for all concerned? By the concerned, I mean Eagles fans who have had to put up with being led to the water year in and year out without being able to take a drink. Is it best for The Eagles to keep going with what brung them to the dance but not win the contest, Is it best for Donovan to spend his career in a city where clearly doesn't feel appreciated and in an offense that doesn't really showcase the best of his abilities? Has the team really shown it's appreciation for McNabb's best season in years by not offering a contract extension. Andy Reid, when asked if McNabb would get one said he'll get on that down the road,  You would think that there would be more urgency.  Is it best for Kevin Kolb to be deprived of the growth all the other children have gotten even though he has shown he can do the job? It's time to turn the page. Changing quarterbacks is the best for all concerned. The Eagles begin the Kevin Kolb era and how many head coaches have stuck around long enough to develop 2 quarterbacks? Kolb is Reids guy and it's time to get the party started. The fans feel rejuvenated because the team would feel new and they  would give them the leeway to grow that they're not getting now. Donovan could end up with a contender that may actually get him that Super Bowl, maybe in San Francisco, or Arizona, or Minnesota. Hell maybe he can replace Jay Leno on the Tonight show, he even comes with his own band. Did you see that air guitar?

Is changing quarterbacks all that bad? Look how many teams have gone to the playoffs the last 2 years with rookies, Matt Ryan in Atlanta, Joe Flacco in Baltimore, Mark Sanchez in New York, Ben Rithlesberger win a Super Bowl in his second year. The Eagles have so many young players on offense and Kolb has been in the system long enough to grow with them. Maybe he can be the leader of the offense If not, then it's time to move Kolb and let him get his career started.

Some things I'd like to throw out before we throw out the last two Dallas games, with Donovan clearly having a bad game Saturday, why not rotate Michael Vick in to pass more? It did work once on the 76 yard touchdown and then we never saw it again. Vick now says he'd be a backup, He does say all the right things doesn't he?

Have the last 2 Dallas games given the league a blueprint on how to beat the Eagles? How to take out Desean Jackson? How to roll this defense? The Giants were 5-0 when they got blown out by the New Orleans Saints. It was that game that showed the league how to slay the Giants. They went 3-8 from that point and the defensive coordinator lost his job after the owner unleashed a tirade in the press room. The fact that the Eagles were shutout by Dallas had a week to fix the problem and then get blown out again is something to think about. We will all be thinking about it for the next year.

McGwire made an Asterisk of himself

If I were king of the baseball universe, I would take all those who tested positive for steroids and remove their records from baseball like they never existed. Granted you can't take away their effects on the teams they played for but you can remove any personal glory which they do not deserve if they cheated. If  anyone deserves at least an asterisk next to their name, it's Mark McGwire

Mark McGwire to me is just another athlete fallen from grace who's trying to cry his way back into our hearts after he lied to us the last time he was there. This man broke Roger Maris home run record, hoisted his son on his shoulders, took all the adulation while knowingly taking the steroids that gave him the physical strength to accomplish it. Where he got  the mental strength I have no idea.

I also have no idea how he could stand in front of a grand jury and say he did not want to talk about the past. This man is only now coming clean because he's got a job back in baseball as hitting coach with the St Louis Cardinals. Why would baseball even let him back into the game after what he did? How could the Cardinals, the team he lied to all those home run hitting years hire him and last but not least, what could he possibly teach a player about hitting???? "Bend over son and take this needle?

With every word I heard from McGwire I wanted to vomit more and more. They should play that for models trying to lose weight. They should hire him out for funerals because the dude can cry on command. and Who does he cry to? the MLB network. Major League Baseball hiring people to cover Major League Baseball so you know you're going to get total objectivity. The same objectivity you get when Dave Spadaro covers the Eagles.

McGwire said he  wanted to come clean in 2005 but was not granted immunity. Immunity from what??? Canseco admited it, he even wrote a book about it. Who ever thought we'd come to a point where Jose Canseco was the honest guy? McGwire's lawyers told him that if he made any admission he could be charged with a crime and that he , his family and friends could be forced to testify before a grand jury. Has any steroid user testified before a grand jury? There was that joke of congressional hearings where Andy Petite gave a deposition  so that he didn't have to confront Roger Clemens when he said Andy "misremembered" which is not even a word. Not one person man enough to admit it, until in McGwire's case there was money on the table in the form of a job. I think McGwire and others like him are living proof that steroids shrinks your balls. but hey, that's just me.

Insanity, thy name is Eagles

Joe Banner once said “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result." Banner also said that the Eagles have "the best roster in the NFL".

Well the best roster in the NFL once again proved The Eagle President's theory as they put on 2 shows in Dallas that would drive their fans insane. Watching those games shows you just how far away this team is from actually contending for a Super Bowl. The Eagles, like so many teams this year, fattened up on the losers to give themselves a false sense of where they are only to be exposed by a winner. It's insane enough to come as close as they have  in the playoff, championship games and Super Bowl of the past, but to get so totally blown out these last two weeks has got to take insanity to a new level

Now what?  The Eagles did a lot of rebuilding this year on the offense as they reshaped the running back, and offensive line positions along with wide receiver. This year I would spend my money on the defense, Defensive end. linebacker and safety come to mind. The window closed on the team that went to last years NFC Championship game. This years team is so different and next year it will be even more.  "The best roster in the NFL" is going to need some major improvement if they're going to keep up with the teams we saw win this weekend. The offensive line needs stabilizing. Jason Peters needs to get on the same page with the snap count, the drama that is Shawn Andrews must be dealt with early or actually put in the rear view mirror. A decision must be made on Brian Westbrook.

The money though must be spent on defense. They need another end opposite Trent Cole, another linebacker even though they get back Stewart Bradley, and if there's a big time free agent safety that could even be in the ball park of  the one they let get away and go to the Pro Bowl this year, find him and sign him. Someone has to step up and be the vocal leader of the defense. This may not be something that you can do in a year, especially an uncapped year where teams may be holding on to their free agents. which brings us to the quarterback position.

If Donovan Mcnabb has a year left on his deal which he does, and the Eagles are not going to be Super Bowl ready next year, then what's the point of keeping Donovan? It may be time for the birds to "show their  youth" and start Kevin Kolb. That's what you drafted him for and he's shown this year in those two 300 yard games that he can handle the job. The Jets are in the playoffs with Mark Sanchez, The Ravens went again with Joe Flacco, Last year Matt Ryan took the Falcons, it's time to find out what you've got in Kolb before the offensive passes him by or he leaves. Maybe use Donovan to get some much needed defensive help. I think a change of scenery for Donovan would be a win-win situation. 5 gets a fresh start on a team that would free him of all the baggage he carries could maybe get him to where he wants to go. Wouldn't it be funny when he gets there, he facing the Eagles on the other side of the field.  What would be more insane than that?

Dave Spadaro spits on the star

He Hocked a lugie in the air and where it landed we all know where. He probably figured it was a good idea at the time and it was. Dave Spit-Daro unloaded on the Dallas Cowboy star not once but twice on camera bringing more publicity to his web site show which like to call Eagle-Jazeera radio than ever before.. It's hard to get street cred when you work for the same team that fired a day worker for criticizing their moves. So if your cred's not coming from your Eagle opinions, you've got to think outside the box, or inside the star as the case may be. Since Spadaro works for the Eagles, and was working for the Eagles when he did it, it puts the organization in a bad position. It's one thing when Desean Jackson tweets his Cowboy tweaks, it's another when the web guy starts doing it. Patrick Crayton was so insulted he told the Dallas Morning News...

"Not once, but twice,'' Crayton said of the number of times the Eagles employee spit on the star. "I don't know if he was trying to get some attention.
"I don't even know what the repercussions are, what the Philly people did to him, the owner and everything. I don't know if he's been fired or fined or anything. If there was no action, then that let's you know what the owner of Philly and the people up there think about it as well.''
During the off-season, the organization fired a stadium employee for posting his feelings about Brian Dawkins' departure on
Facebook. Crayton was aware of that incident.
"My thing is, if they fired a guy over MySpace (actually Facebook) over a former player, and this guy comes down here and spits on another team's logo and nothing is done about that, it let's us know what Philly thinks about it.'' Spadaro did apologize.

The other problem is that the Eagles had to play the Cowboys in the playoffs one week after getting crushed by Dallas. The last thing you'd want to do is make them mad which he did. Crayton had 3 catches fir 34 yards in the 34-14 playoff loss. The key to doing wacky radio stunts is timing. Maybe he should have done his star spitting AFTER the game. He could have joined the rest of us. Either way, it was a great stunt!

Is Donovan McNabb a leader on the Eagles?

Much has been made of Donovan McNabb's comments regarding the youth showing itself in Sundays loss in Dallas. The only thing I haven't heard from anyone in town that's been bashing him is that he's right in what he said. Also with the way he played in these games, he must be a very young 33.

This is a young team. A team in transition, with young players in key roles. Jeremy Maclin, Lesean McCoy, Nick Cole at center anchoring yet another version of  the offensive line with newcomers like Floyd Peters and fullback Leonard Weaver. The defense has practically undergone a total transformation with no real leadership to speak of. That used to come from the safety position, or maybe middle linebacker. Their youth did show and when things like that happen, usually it's  the leader of the team who calls them out about it. Usually the players respect the leaders opinion and take heed to what he says. Has anyone ever questioned Brian Dawkins when he made observations over  the years? They don't in Denver where he's already had team meetings which turned their defense around on Thanksgiving.

Donovan Mcnabb makes a statement about the youth showing itself and when Desean Jackson hears about it he says "if you play that in the locker room, that's not something nobody wants to hear." . The fact that McNabb sent the message publicly and it was reacted to publicly makes me wonder if he is respected as a leader on this team, and if not, what is the point of keeping him around. Maybe it's time to let the youth show at quarterback too.
