Say No To Geno's Steaks
Don't Eat Geno's Steaks. They are horrible. What a fraud of a cheesesteak!

Steak Geography
I love Leo's and agree that it is the best in Delco. Problem is you have Fresh Works ranked higher which is also Delco.
05/12/2008 5:42PM
#1?
I have to question your choice of #1. Good roll, cheesy and alot of steak but no way is it better than Chinks or even Steve's. Sliced meat on a roll beats chopped up second rate meat anyday. Why do you think places chop thier steaks?? Because its lesserquality meat!!!
05/09/2008 5:48PM
Cheesesteak
Vicki's Deli - Cheesesteaks in Eddystone, PA I believe are the best. Not sure what they do but the flavor is great.

Southwest Steaks
was a lifelong resident (Bucks County) of the Philadelphia area until 1998 when I moved to Colorado and now Phoenix, AZ. Just could not take the harsh winters and the dreariness of the Northeast. Accidentally saw a snippet on local TV about a cheese steak and hoagie place in Scottsdale AZ. Believe it or not they make real cheese steaks and hoagies in the Mexican southwest. All we usually get is tacos and burritos. Missed the good Philadelphia food and go to this real Philadelphia eatery here in Scottsdale, AZ. I asked them if they were really from Philly because many eating establishments say they make Philadelphia cheese steaks but it is a lie. The eatery here in Scottsdale is called Corleone%u2019s. I checked to make sure they were really from Philly when I asked them where their Philly establishment was and they knew where the Boulevard and Red Lion Road was. And when I heard they went to the Jersey shore (here they go to the beach ala California vernacular) I knew they were from Philly. The real test was when I said %u2018wid%u2019 and I got a cheese steak with Wiz. They had cans stacked up in the back.
04/28/2008 2:17PM
TRADITION
As for the # 1, anything thats on a toasted roll is not a true philly cheesesteak. As for the disrespect of Genos and Pats, thats disrespecting philly tradition. Maybe you should stick to buffalo wings.
04/27/2008 9:22PM
delaware county HTOWN Glen
Halligans in havertown is very good glenn, and so is jano's in drexel hill
04/25/2008 6:42PM
Dan
I wish i had commented earlier, Montigrillo in Pennsauken on Westfield Ave. Has one of the best cheesesteaks in the area. Trust me, i'm a huge cheesesteak critic & have been all over Philly, Jersey & beyond. This is a top 10 or lower. I've never had a cheesesteak at 4 of your top tens, but am putting them on my list. If anything venture over. You will be please.
04/23/2008 11:02AM
Mr. Steve
LaForno in Media definately deserves attention for best in DE County. Their large with whiz, american or provolone are all consistently what you want in roll, moist and flavorful meat/cheese combination. They won a blind test of 6 DE County establishments (including Jim's in Springfield)at a recent neighborhood party!

broad axe tavern?
posted on 4/21 below: the broad axe tavern shut down in august of 2002. decent/good cheese steak, at best, but then again this list is fatally flawed, anyway. both gooey's and nick's roast beef were totally neglected, and how can the likes of the pepper mill and chubby's achieve significantly better rankings than mama's. Glenn, i'm convinced the only reason mama's didn't get top 15 respect is b/c you were just too darn full of steaks by that point and couldn't handle the sandwich. if you can't take the heat - stay out of the kitchen. Also, the second best cheese steak in the entire city is at Billy Murhphy's Irish Saloonery in East Falls (conrad and indian queen). We are in agreement that JRP is the CITY'S BEST!
04/22/2008 9:10AM
You left out a Great One
How could you leave out the Italian Kitchen in East Lansdowne just outside of Yeadon Pa and Cobbs Creek. One the meatest Cheesesteaks anywhere and the price is right (5.90)I know the contest is over, but anyone in Southwest Philly will tell you the ItalianKitchen is the ONE! It's still not too late too try it Mac. Harvey C

04/21/2008 2:22PM
Rick's
I have been to Rick's many a time. My friend used to work there as well. I have never seen meet piled high. They make it fresh every time, even with the long lines. Maybe thats why it takes so long...Take another look
04/21/2008 2:09PM
#10
"Squishy" doesn't begin to describe the appalling quality of a Dalessandro's (more like Dalesloppo's) steak sandwich. Why oh why do judges overlook nearby Barry's Steaks in Roxborough who makes by far the better cheesesteak! Try Barry's sometime.
04/21/2008 1:35PM
Cheesesteak - Overbrook
There is a Latin phrase - De gustibus non disputandum est - it roughly translates to you can't argue about taste and I only just heard of this survey but I didn'e see Overbrook - which is my personal favorite. I am glad you said Pat's and Geno's suck - they are so well known but only stay open because all the tourists go there - they suck.
04/21/2008 12:42PM
Crackers
What The ? You never had a Gooey Louie's cheesesteak and this is supposed to be The "Cheesesteak Challenge"? Well, everyone I know thinks that isn't so untill you include 'gooey louies' at moyamesing and moore ,the Pennsport Mall, place is THE BEST! handsdown ,no "Challenge"! Try one and then hold this so-called challenge again.
04/21/2008 12:11PM

04/21/2008 9:23AM
Broad Axe Tevern
Glenn, Did you ever try The Broad Axe Taverm, right next to Phil's in Blue Bell. Cheesesteak is excellent, much better than Phil's
04/21/2008 9:04AM
#4 was disspointing
Johnny%u2019s was so thin, that in major parts, a single slice of the aforementioned ribeye constituted the %u201Cpacked-meat%u201D. John was so disappointed, he didn%u2019t bother to finish it. Joe reported his was %u201Cnot that good%u201D. His friend gave it an %u201COK%u201D rating. Mine, maybe thanks to the mushrooms and certainly more meat than the others, but in no means %u201Cstuffed%u201D, was Ok. The rib eye was a nice taste. However, with mushrooms, mine came in costing $7.50 before tax.All in all, if this is 4th best, find a better list

crazy
not just pizza you must not be from south philly that place is the worst and its filthy in there! johns the best how do you even put a place with the words pizza or hoagie in a cheesesteak competition
04/20/2008 6:04PM
Grey Lodge Pub
How long were you in the bar and how many beers did you have before you ate one of their cheestesteaks. The cheesesteak was just plain nasty, and the fries won best in philly? The fries were burnt, the cheese was that phony packaged stuff. I can't believe you ranked them at 5. It was more of a sloppy roast beef sandwhich than a cheesesteak. Stick to ranking movies because the Grey Lodge should not even be in the top 40. Also the it was expensive and the steak was only about 6 inches long.
04/19/2008 4:18PM

Good Stuff
I've only been to 2 of your top 6. Shinks and Steves. I truly believe Chinks was the best steak I have ever had and Steves is a close second. I found myself laughing at your comments about Paganos, Max's and the 2 fake king of cheesesteaks down on Passyunk ave.. The only one I would disagree with you on is Delasanndro's.. That was one of the worst steaks I have ever had.. The are overrated.. Coop from Mt Airy

best burger
I know this is ancient history now and I have a place that is outside the Philly area. I agree the Rossi burger is very nice. By far the best burger in the world is in Harrisburg, about 2 blocks from the capitol bldg. The Jackson House only serves lunch on weekdays unless the state is closed. If you ever get the chance go to 6th & forster and you will be born again!
04/14/2008 11:59AM

NJ tourist in Philly
Being from NJ I've only tried the mainstream places in Philly. Pat's & Geno's are a waste. Definately a tourist trap. John's and Tony Lukes are always good. If you ever need a taster for a veal or chicken cutlet contest, I'd be interested. Thanks Glen.

Dad's Stuffing's
Glen, I've been a loyal listener to the station for over 15 years and have closely followed all of your food contests. I am very conservative when it comes to giving great reviews especially pertaing to food. After all "it's a mater of taste" In this particular case I've reserved this recommendation and am going full throttle to passionately and respectfully request that you PLEASE! add Dad's Stuffings located at 312 Black Horse Pike in Gloucester Twp. as a late entry to the contest. I promise you will be VERY impressed with this hidden gem of a steak in South Jersey or it's on me!! Thanks for everything you do and the great content of your shows! Lee Waldron Berlin, New Jersey 609-280-3670

Cheese Steak Contest
Glenn, Love the list! I am the DJ at PAddywhacks where the finals are being held. I also own a small concrete company. I think along with the celebrity judges, you should have a second panel of regular people judges. I would love to be on the panel. We have Northeast, Southwest and South Philly people on the staff at Paddywhacks, we would love to help out. I can be reached at oatz19@comcast.net

Malvern's best
The best I've ever had is the Special Steak Sandwich at Anthony's in Malvern but maybe that's because I add hot peppers to the mushrooms, pepperoni, etc. It's big but you will force yourself to finish it. Kim

If Bruce Willis likes it...
then it's gotta be true, right? The Roman Pantry in Carneys Point, NJ (Exit 4 on I-295) is famed because Bruce Willis said they are "the best cheesesteaks in the world." While I don't necessarily agree they're the best in the world (Jim's gets that honor), they're pretty darn good and worth the drive. Especially for the 2-footers!
04/09/2008 8:07AM
michael j. kelly
I just want to let you know that Campos has not been at 2nd and Market St. for 60 yrs. They have only been there at most 10. They are really from S.w. Philly.
04/09/2008 6:45AM
Chopped vs Non-chopped
Glen, I think you should have two rankings, chopped and non-chopped. I prefer chopped but I never had a non-chopped cheesesteaks. So based on your reviews I guess I'll have to try one. To me it's a preference, I can't imagine a non-chopped being as goods as a chopped but I'll keep an open mind unlike the character that brought up dog food. Whatever... I think this is great what your doing because now I can go out and try these places myself. Not sure if you really have a bias against Delaware but I've just moved there from Chester Co (which has some great steak shops) and they have some great ones as well. Don't leave out Delaware.
04/09/2008 6:31AM
Pickles & Chips
Glen, you gotta give Pickles and Chips a try in North Wilmington just off of the the intersection of Foulk and Silverside Road. It's the only cheesesteak that has ever reminded me of the ones at the beer garden near where I grew up in Coatesville. Wewere only allowed in to buy the food because we were under aged but I had waited years to taste that taste again. It'll be worth your trip. Greg Pugh

Ever try Ernie's in the Northeast
Hi Glen. I know you're wrapping this up, but, if you ever find yourself near Northeast High School, Ernie's on Cottman Ave right across from the school makes a great steak.
04/08/2008 2:16PM
Pats
I totally agree with your comments about Pat's. I no longer live in PA and it boggles my mind that people ask me about Pat's. Only tolerable at very late hours after carousing.
04/08/2008 1:15PM
Where's the real place?

Why doesn't Phillips on Passyunk near tasker get any love?
04/07/2008 2:53PM
2 missed cheesesteaks
You missed two places that I tend to gravitate towards . . . Viterelli's on King's Hwy in Cherry Hill, and Big John's on Rt 70 in Cherry Hill. Big John's has gone through a couple of owners since Big John use to own it, so I can't guarantee the quality of their most recent cheesesteak. But Viterelli's has ALWAYS had a good cheesesteak. Check them out!!! Guy
04/07/2008 2:33PM
Just say NO to "chopped steaks"
Been to most of the prominent establishments and steve's is in my opinion the best around

New England Pizza 9867 Bustleton Ave
I Know!!! Who would ever say NEW England Pizza??? Believe me this family run franchise store has it on the ball and on the bun. Haven't had as good a cheese steak since DelAssandros stopped taking pride in their sandwiches and just started pumping them out in bulk. Great roll and good beef. Give them a try.
04/07/2008 1:25PM
Peoples Pizza
On Rt. 38 near Cherry Hill has a surprisingly big deliscious steak and a great bunch of guys behind the counter putting them together.
04/07/2008 1:10PM
Sorry Glen
If Ishkabibles and Gooie Louies aren't even on your list, your list is just plain not valid.

04/06/2008 5:01PM
Rich Caskey
Voltaco's in Ocean City, NJ. 10th and West. Only open weekends until the season starts. Cheesesteak is very good. The Italian sub is the best I've ever had. I travel 160 miles round trip for it. They slightly toast the roll and everything is fresh. Incredible. Local runner up is Silvios in Hatboro. Lee's Hoagies make me gag.
04/06/2008 4:42PM

04/06/2008 10:42AM
Barrys in Roxborough
I agree with most of your assessments, however I believe that you allowed atmosphere and psychological marketing impact sway some of your judgement. Dalessando's has sold the name to new people and changed the ingrediants of the "old" sandwich. Chubbys would be my second choice only to Barrys. Barrys does very little advertising yet has thrived for years in Roxborough. Being a South Philly transplant, I get my fix from the chessestakes at Barrys. Also, do you think its a little unfair to compare little joints who prepare a small amount of steaks (bars and corner joints) to those who pump out primarly steaks? Prehaps a subset of these ranks are in order.

04/05/2008 9:47PM
Jim's Baby
Hey i grew up on Jim's CheeseSteaks the best out there. If you never had one. Make your way out to 62nd st in West Philly. You will not regret it. Don't foget the onions.
04/05/2008 5:54PM
Nice rankings
I judge Chubbys to be a little better than Dalessandro's, but of the places I have been to, and tried cheesesteaks, I think your rankings are otherwise spot on (particularly with regard to the low rankings of the places with the bright neon lights in South Philly). One final comment: Abner's steaks used to be good when I went to Drexel. I went back a few years ago, and the words "putrid meat and soggy bun" come to mind.
04/05/2008 5:33PM

I think he could come up with more places in the Ambler Area. Aren't there any Italians in Ambler anymore? Try Ninos on Bethlehem Pike nr. Butler intersection maybe. Also, guess Glen should do The Chicken Cheesesteak rankings next...

VOLTACO'S - OCEAN CITY
go there. top 10. guaranteed.
04/04/2008 3:34PM
sonny's vs. campo's
the only thing that could possibly put sonny's on the list over campo's is that it's open late so when you're hammered and already short a bunch of taste buds you can't tell how dry and crappy their steak is. Campo's all the way. Top 5 in the city - hands down.
04/04/2008 2:36PM

Trying too hard
the guy that posted the yosteaks link: You aretrying way too hard to be "Philly". All the Yos are real fake. And it isn't called a Philly Cheesesteak, it is just a cheesesteak. Also, the word is "with" not "wit". You don't delibertaely say "wit" it just sounds like it. You are trying way too hard.
04/04/2008 12:41PM

If you must chop it --it was tough to begin with--i have been telling people for 20 years that steves was the best and pats was the worst

Try Walt's Steaks in Clifton Heights
A nice spot, with very good milk shakes, they always seem to be left out of these contests. Take a shot.
04/04/2008 9:38AM

I can't believe you have not at least tried Philips on pasayunk, your list is good and you have tried many places that a lot of people in philly have never heard of, however this is in south philly and you have not tried it yet, come on
04/03/2008 9:23AM
Lenny's Italian Deli
Try Lenny's in Conshohocken. Best Roast Pork for sure. Has a South Philly feel, so I'd give the cheesesteak a shot. I do agree with John's Roast Pork....best steak, bar none.
04/03/2008 2:58AM
Pepper Mill in WC

Why no Kelly's?
Hey Glenn, Glad to see you on the afternoons. Congrats. We spoke on the air about Kelly's in Bryn Mawr on Lancaster Avenue. If you visit 40 places, you've got to visit Kelly's and its probably only 10 minutes from your house. Great cheesesteak, beer and good looking girls. Not a bad threesome.

john's roast pork
me and 2 other guys had steaks there yesterday..not a good steak at all...it was stringy, taste ruberry..not worthy of the #1 spot. the do use good rolls and give you alot of meat and cheese..asked for fried onions and never got them.
04/02/2008 3:27AM
the chef
Although Steve's Prince of steaks is just ok, I belive Chinks is the heart of Philadelphia and the real deal.
04/02/2008 12:00AM
Little Italy (Ambler)
This is why you continue to prove your not from Phila. I could name 10 spots that you didn't even try. Genos and Pats are garbage which you basically said. Here is a top 5. Already won best of phila. in past in Phila magazine. Little Italy in Ambler very close to Phils tavern which I agree with your comments. If you want the next ten let me know but I won't hold my breathe. Not bad though as I have learned a couple new spots.
04/01/2008 11:36PM
Lee's Hoagies
Come on Glen get over to Lee's Hoagies in Marlton. I know what your thinking, your going to try Lee's and automatically end your competition because there so good and it will be unanimously the best in the Philly area. Its a good idea saving the bestfor last Glen.

Why not Jim's? by Todd Ehrhart
I was just wondering after looking over your list that Jim's on south and 4th was not on it. I know you mentioned it with the other Jim's but why the omission? I know its a assembly line like but its better than Geno's and Pat's. Iam bias though it is my favorite cheesesteak place
04/01/2008 2:56PM

Cheesesteaks a little further South
When your in the Tampa /St. Pete / Cearwater area the place to go is; Delco's Original formally La Spada's at 1737 Main St., Dunedin, FL. They are orginally from Montgomery County. When I need my cheesesteak fix and don't want to wait for my next triphome - this is where I go and it's just as good as being home.
04/01/2008 11:04AM
A FEW CHANGES
Hey glenn great list. Just dont know how talk of the town is so high. You must have got them on a good day, because of the few times I have been there it has been far from good. Also JRP is easily #1 no questions asked. I am a little suprised you didn't take a look at Philips in south philadelphia. It is much better then several of the south philly places you looked at.
04/01/2008 10:39AM
have you tried LEE's
Have you tried Lee's Hoagies in Marlton?? I guarante you'll like it.

03/31/2008 8:54PM
Gooey Louie's
I still some people commenting on trying there yet don't see them being rated. I grew up on 2nd Street in South Philly and they were my favorite as a kid (now 30). Give this guys a shot. Make sure you are on an empty stomach though. They have HUGE sandwiches!

03/31/2008 4:52PM
Manayunk
duffs steaks in manayunk is legit, try them out they are definitely better than well over half the list already...plus look at the name, half of your spots are dishing out frozen steak ems, duffs is a real joint that makes classic philly cheesesteaks
03/31/2008 4:51PM
DUFF'S
Glen you gotta go to DUFFS STEAKS in manayunk, this place is a untapped resource of a quality sandwich. In light of your challenge i went and got a "provy wit" (not my normal go to) and it was delicious.
03/31/2008 1:17PM
best
I'm heading to Narberth for the 42nd best cheesesteak Narberth for the
03/31/2008 8:16AM
ANTHONY'S
Your review of Anthony's cheesesteaks is all wrong; and no the same person was not writing in the comments. Say what you will but Anthony's is a hell of a lot better then 70% of these places that try to pass off their so called cheesesteaks as food
03/30/2008 9:24PM
Cheesesteaks
Gotta try Mr V's in Franklin Mills. Right up there with Steve's and Chink's.
03/30/2008 9:16PM
Another salvo regarding Delaware
Mark, I have to agree with you that Glen (and WIP) has an not-so-underlying air of disdain regarding Delaware. And you could not be more correct regarding that, if this Challenge is for the best steaks in the listening area, then from the get-go Capriottis, Casapullas and Claymont should have been earmarked for appraisal, no doubt. At this point, we'll just take Claymont, just to see on Delaware joint at least considered. Have all of Glen's food surveys skipped Delaware? Not sure what the deal may be, but it's always come across with several WIP hosts. Que sera sera. I also think you are spot on regarding Slacks in Delaware. Never been to the other Slacks but this one won't see 2009. On my visit, the service was poor, and there are just too many other quality steak places in Delaware (yes, in Delaware) for this one to survive.
03/30/2008 6:39PM
Mr. V's Steaks
If your looking for the best steaks, how can you not have gone to Mr. V's Steaks yet. Try it!!!
03/30/2008 6:11PM
Wonderful Job Glen!
I really enjoy your reviews... I think people take their cheesesteaks VERY serious compared to burgers, pizza and ribs... Do I hear chicken wings or steak next?
03/30/2008 2:35PM
Only in Philthadelphia
Does a place named John's Roast Pork win a Cheesesteak Contest
03/30/2008 2:20PM
Phillies Game
Hey Glen took your advice I went to the Phils game yesterday and normally I would go to tony lukes but I went to talk of the town instead and it was alot better than tony lukes and you don't have to wait forever to get your sandwich,so that's where I will be going from now on to talk of the town.Talk of the town you just got me as a new customer.
03/30/2008 1:03PM
Claymont Steak Shop and Don's in Boothwyn
